Customers can save money through fuel and maintenance savings. Louisianans enjoy some of the lowest electric rates in nation, making electricity competitive with traditional fossil-fuels for in-port vessel use. Further, using a vessel’s fossil fuel burning engines less frequently should result in fewer repairs or maintenance work. The amount of fuel and maintenance savings, however, vary by vessel type and energy usage patterns.

Shore power significantly reduces emissions. Entergy’s first shore power project is in Port Fourchon in South Louisiana. Entergy Louisiana’s investments in carbon-free nuclear generation, highly efficient natural gas generation, and renewable generation make the utility’s generation fleet one of the cleanest large-scale fleets nation-wide. Electrification allows customers to leverage the utility’s emissions portfolio to create local and societal benefits. Preliminary analyses performed by Entergy using EPA data indicate that using shore power for marine vessels in Entergy’s footprint can result in significant reductions of localized emissions, estimated at as much as 98% reduction in nitrogen oxides 48% reduction in sulfur oxides 42% reduction in carbon emissions These estimates are based on Entergy Louisiana’s “at-the-plug” vs. low-sulfur marine diesel oil (MDO).

When providing service to a single customer, Entergy owns the extended distribution system and the customer owns the platform, cable management system, and vessel-side equipment. Each owner will be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of its assets. When providing service to multiple customers, Entergy will work with the stakeholders to ensure appropriate allocation of equipment costs and maintenance.

If there is an outage, the vessels can revert to its diesel auxiliary engines.

Yes, all Entergy’s services will see benefits of advanced metering infrastructure. Customers leveraging shore power will typically have metering that will give additional insights about the asset health of their on-premise equipment along with the power quality of its Entergy feed.

The use of shore power is increasing nationally, typically pursued for environmental purposes. Entergy’s low electricity prices allow us to partner with customers to make shore power economically viable and environmentally-friendly. We are exploring opportunities with customers to bring shore power technology to other ports. This technology reduces emissions in communities and improves operational efficiencies for customers, so we believe this customer offering can bring benefits (both environmental and economic) across the Gulf Coast region. When evaluating tonnage, 7 of the top 20 ports in the nation are located in our service territory, and we are exploring opportunities to bring this offering to those and other ports in our region.
